AAI GM tournament New Delhi 4th round

Two victories on two consecutive days not only brought back the smile on Krishnan Sasikiran’s face but also boosted his morale in the ongoing AAI GM Chess tournament in New Delhi.

In the fourth round on Saturday, Sasikiran the oldest player in fray at 30 years defeated reigning Women’s world Champion Yifan Hou after having defeated Victor Laznicka in the third round. Even as the Chennai-based GM is warming up after two disastrous outings in the first two games, Parimarjan Negi, the other Indian in fray lost to Laznicka in this six-player Double Round Robin event.

Fabiano Caruana who sprinted to a 3/3 score ,slowed down a bit with a draw against  Wesley So of Philipines but neverthe less stays at the top of the points tally with 3.5 points. Laznicka follows next with 3 points while Sasikiran and So have tallied two points each, Negi 1.5 and Yifan is yet to open her account.

It was an error prone Catalan game on both sides between Sasikiran and Yifan where the Indian should have settled matters and scuttled home early after gaining a good position. However, after mistakes on both sides and a blunder on Yifan’s part, the game petered to a King and knight ending where Sasikran romped home the victor after 66 moves.

Negi opted for the Semi-Slav Defence against Laznicka and this game too came for its share of self criticism by both players for the inaccuracies they displayed. A fluid position offered plenty of complications but Negi made a mistake and ended on the losing side.

The Italian game between Wesley So and Caruana ended rather peacefully after 31 moves with almost a full board, the bishops being the only pieces to be exchanged.

Round 4: Viktor Laznicka (3) bt Parimarjan Negi (1.5); Krishnan Sasikiran (2) bt Yifan Hou (0); Wesley So (2) drew with Fabiano Caruana (3.5).
