Lev Abramovich Polugavsky (20 Nov, 1934 - 30 Aug, 1995) was an International Grandmaster of chess and frequest contender for the world chess Championship. to celebrate Polugavsky's 60th birthday a sicilian Defence themed tournament was held in recognition of his contribution to the opening.

From 5th July 2012 - 13th July, 2012 a 9-round Swiss Competion will be held in the russian city of Samara. This tournament is to Tribute Grandmaster Lev Polugavsky. This is the second memorial tournament. The first Polugavsky memorial was held in 2011 with the participation of 122 players. Grand Master Semen Dvoirys from Cheliyabinsk was the sole winner with 7.5 points.
